Fleas are annoying, and they’re everywhere. There are over 2000 varieties of these little creatures and, let’s face it-you’ll never be truly free of them. With a female flea laying up to 50 eggs in a day, all you need is a handful to start an all out infestation. Don’t fret-you can protect your dog. That’s where the flea shampoo comes in. Then again, you don’t want just any dog flea shampoo out there. You want one that will be the best solution. With so many products to choose from, you’ll understandably be in a pickle. Here are some of the best products in the market to help you make a decision.

Oster Oatmeal Naturals Flea Shampoo

Made with 100% natural oatmeal, this shampoo soothes and protects you dog’s skin. It comes without those dyes, paraben, alcohol and phosphates that may be an issue to numerous dogs. Better still-it does not wash off on topical flea applications. Of course, it just doesn’t repel, but it also kills, the fleas.

It also works on ticks, so that’s an added advantage. It’s cost friendly too, seeing as you can get it for under $6.

Ovitrol Plus Flea and Tick Shampoo

Ovitrol went out of their way when releasing this product. Not only does it kill fleas, it prevents their eggs from hatching for up to 28 days. It pretty much exterminates them. The shampoo has a baby fresh scent that is quite appealing and its rich, creamy formula cleans and conditions the dog’s fur. It also works on ticks and lice, a welcome advantage. However, be prepared to cough up a little more on this one, as it retails at around $12 for the 12-ounce version.

Zodiac Oatmeal Flea & Tick Dog & Puppy Conditioning Shampoo

This shampoo does everything from killing fleas and their eggs to giving you a month of control over the pre-adult fleas. It has an aesthetic appeal, as it leaves the dog’s coat shiny, soft, and manageable. The shampoo removes loose dandruff, scales and dirt. What it does to the fleas, it also does to ticks and lice.

However, it’s only usable on dogs and puppies over 12 weeks of age. It goes for $12 thereabouts, depending on where you make your purchase.

Vet’s Best Anti-Flea Easy Spray Flea Shampoo

This one is very popular. It kills fleas on contact. It’s incredibly easy to apply. It’s completely natural with the botanical extracts and lacks pyrethrins and cedar oil. It’s one of the best fleas shampoo products you can find, but will cost you some more (it retails for about $14).

When you’re using the shampoo on the dog, getting it all scrubbed up will go a long way in easing its discomfort. You’ll also get a better idea of just how bad the flea situation may be. So go through its fur carefully as you bath it. Scrub thoroughly and take your time. Fleas naturally move to higher ground. Start at the dog’s head and then work your way down. You can use a flea comb as you scrub.

When you’re done getting rid of the fleas on your dog, remember that some of the canny little things may still be around in your home. You don’t want your dog to be re-infected. So don’t forget to treat your home too.
